Upon arriving to Jilly's Puff and Fluff Grooming, your pet will be checked for mats. Pets with severely matted coats will require extra attention. It will be determined if the mats can be brushed out and/or untangled. If they cannot, your dog will need to be shaved. Mats can be very painful for your animal. They can grow tight in a pet’s coat and can ultimately damage and tear the pet’s skin, which provides a breeding ground for parasite infestations and infections. Removing a heavily matted coat can cause nicks, cuts or abrasions due to skin growths trapped in the mats. Hematomas, an abnormal pooling of blood under the skin that results from a broken or ruptured blood vessel can also be caused by the matting. Moisture and urine can also be trapped within the mat near the pet’s skin allowing mold, fungus or bacteria to grow, producing skin irritations that exist before the grooming process.
After-effects of the mat removal procedures can include itchiness, skin redness, self-inflicted irritations or abrasions and failure of the hair to regrow. In some cases, pets may also exhibit brief behavioral changes due to the odd feeling of less hair and possible bleeding caused by hematomas.
We understand sometimes mats happen. Don't beat yourself up. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Jilly's Puff and Fluff Grooming will be gentle and caring during the mat removal process. Patience and extra time will be taken to make sure your pet is comfortable.
